A true Maori Experience

The Living Māori Village is an authentic village situated on the outskirts of Rotorua, within the Te Whakarewarewa Valley, a unique geothermal field with features that include the world famous Pohutu Geyser, Prince of Wales Feathers Geyser, boiling mud-pools, steam vents, bubbling pools and coloured lakes.

Our Māori Guides who are proud of their heritage enjoy recounting stories and legends handed down from their ancestors, including accounts of the eruption at Lake Tarawera in 1886 which destroyed the then 8th wonder of the world – the famous Pink and White Terraces.

The fully guided tours give all manuhiri (visitors) the opportunity to get an understanding of what it is like to live within the challenging environment of Te Whakarewarewa Valley. Past dignitaries who have visited Whakarewarewa include Queen Elizabeth II and US First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

Daily life for the people of Whakarewarewa – The Living Maori Village, includes cooking in the bubbling pools and steam vents, heating their homes from the geothermal waters and bathing in the refreshing and therapeutic waters. Kai (food) cooked in the bubbling pools and steam vents is available at our local Ned’s Café, and includes hangi pies, full hangi meals, sweetcorn on the cob (cooked in the Champagne pool – Parekohuru).

Māori Cultural Performance Shows are performed daily by one of Rotorua’s leading Kapa Haka Groups – Te Pakira. The show includes waiata (songs) of our history, Patere (rhythmic chants), performance of the world famous HAKA (performed by NZ Sporting Teams) and audience participation section which is always a fun time. There is also the opportunity after the show to meet with the performers and get some photos.
